Get to Know MD Anderson’s Integrative Medicine Center

Friends-

I am thrilled to partner with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Integrative Medicine Center this October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. I had the opportunity to visit with the Center’s director, Dr. Lorenzo Cohen, about the services this organization provides cancer patients and survivors.

The Integrative Medicine Center offers therapies that reduce patients’ stress and anxiety and improve their physical, mental and emotional well-being so cancer treatment happens in the healthiest environment possible. Programs and therapies include acupuncture, massage, cooking classes and more to decrease side effects and symptoms of treatment. The Center’s programs empower patients to consider things they can do themselves during treatment, like eating healthy and meditation for stress. “There’s not a lot of awareness on the ability to control symptoms with things like acupuncture and massage and music therapy, which is a great way to get socially connected but also to express difficult emotions in a safe, comfortable environment,” says Dr. Cohen.

I also chatted with Karen Mead, cancer survivor and mom of seven, who explains how the Integrative Medicine Center really helped her develop strategies to take care of herself during her year-long treatment.

I believe strongly in the body-mind-spirit connection. I love that MD Anderson has the forethought to educate and offer these complimentary therapies in addition to cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. I am in awe of Dr. Cohen’s work on behalf of cancer patients and his commitment to the Center. He’s truly an inspiration. Learn more in my interview below.
